World Builders 2012: Week 4

This week we welcomed Ellen Daoust, the AmeriCorps Fellow who will be joining the Clubhouse community for a year of service facilitating Adobe Youth Voices projects, coordinating Clubhouse to College/Career (C2C) events, field-trips and guest speakers, and learning some new technology to apply in creative and educational settings.  She’s already begun to work with the World Builders, producing art work for the underwater world and engaging the youth in workshop activities.  She will begin working on a short AYV documentary in the upcoming week about World Builders 2012.

In addition to welcoming Ellen, the World Builders spent some time with guest speaker Jason Hass, a game designer with The Educational Arcade at the MIT Media Lab.  Jason gave a presentation about some of the games he’s designed, listened to the game elements that the World Builders have been working on and spent some time collaborating with them in production.

We spent the rest of the week focused on building physical characters, places and things that define the five regions of the Clubhouse world.  So far we have a glow underwater world, a mine-cart adventure realm, a digital technology realm to be controlled by an arduino board mounted on a skateboard, a temple for the winter butterfly resort and the frame-work for the live-size maze.

Sci-Core Intern Edwin Vallejo led the young World Builders in a very successful and popular Duct-tape-wallet-making workshop.  Volunteer artists Hilery Chao and Stephania D’Amato led a productive drawing workshop which attracted several young artist in the group and yielded many new anime-style drawings for our new world.

Friday afternoon we spent some time celebrating August birthdays. Joanne Daley, Jordan’s mom and Clubhouse parent mentor brought in a couple of cakes and we celebrated 5 Clubhouse birthdays, nicely wrapping up yet another productive week of World Building.

Next week is our final production week!  Check the blog to see how this collaborative production comes together as we prepare for the upcoming showcase on August 22nd & 23rd.
